About Jack Gaughan
John Thomas “Jack” Gaughan (1935–2024) was a beloved Brentwood, California, artist, educator, Rotarian, and community leader whose life was defined by creativity, service, and connection. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, and educated in Psychology, Fine Arts, and Business at Baldwin-Wallace College, Jack built a career that blended his artistic talent with a deep understanding of people. He explored nearly every medium—painting, sculpture, ceramics, pottery, photography, and design—using art to express emotion and elevate everyday beauty. After relocating to California, he inspired countless students as an art instructor at Los Medanos College and helped establish the Delta Gallery of the Arts, championing “locally grown art” and mentoring emerging creators. His passion extended to community theater, where he co-founded the Ghostlight Theatre Ensemble, producing and designing productions like Broadway Under the Stars that became cherished local traditions. A devoted member of the Rotary Club of Brentwood, Jack embodied “Service Above Self,” using creativity to strengthen civic life and inspire compassion. Named Brentwood’s Artist of the Year in 2012 and Citizen of the Year in 2013, his legacy endures in the artists he nurtured, the cultural institutions he helped build, and the countless lives he touched with kindness, imagination, and love for community.
